Professional vs Business Income
Professional: Occasional webinars, one-off consultations (Section 194J TDS).Business: Regular/systematic online courses, monthly events (Section 44AD).
Section 44ADA: 50% Deemed Expense Benefit
If professional income is below ₹50L, you can claim 50% as deemed expenses without maintaining detailed books. Only 50% of income is taxable. Compare with actual expenses to choose the better option.
GST on Virtual Services
18% GST applies if turnover exceeds ₹20L. Charge GST on services to Indian participants. For foreign participants, reverse charge mechanism may apply (consult GST expert).
TDS by Payment Platforms
Platforms deduct 10% TDS (Section 194J) on professional services. Collect Form 16A and claim credit in your ITR. YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms issue TDS certificates.
Deductible Expenses
Platform fees (Zoom, StreamYard), equipment (proportionate depreciation), internet charges, marketing costs, and content creation expenses are deductible. Maintain invoices and receipts.
