Understanding YouTube Income in India
How YouTube Ad Revenue Works
YouTube pays creators through AdSense. The platform takes 45% of ad revenue and you receive 55%. Your CPM (Cost Per Mille - revenue per 1000 views) varies based on your niche, audience location, and content type. Finance and business content typically has higher CPM (₹150-300) compared to entertainment or gaming (₹50-100).
Section 44ADA Benefits
If your annual income is less than ₹50 lakhs, you can opt for Section 44ADA presumptive taxation. This means only 50% of your income is considered taxable, and the remaining 50% is deemed as business expenses. You don't need to maintain detailed books of accounts, saving CA fees and compliance burden.
GST Registration
You need to register for GST if your annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs. International income (like YouTube AdSense from Google Ireland) is considered export of services and is zero-rated, but sponsorship income from Indian brands requires 18% GST.
Tax Deductions for Creators
- •Equipment: Camera, microphone, lights, computer (claim depreciation)
- •Software: Editing software, analytics tools, design tools subscriptions
- •Internet & Phone: Monthly bills (proportionate to business use)
- •Studio Rent: If shooting at home, claim proportionate rent as expense
- •Team Costs: Editor, thumbnail designer, manager salaries
Important Notes
- •Keep proper records of all income sources and expenses
- •Brands may deduct 10% TDS on sponsorship payments above ₹30,000
- •Pay advance tax quarterly if tax liability exceeds ₹10,000
- •Consider incorporating (LLP/Pvt Ltd) once income exceeds ₹50 lakhs
